Restricting Access by Date and Time

Restricting Access by Date and Time

Date and Time

If you have a document, file or other activity that you would like to make available to students at a particular time, you will be able to set up a 'restriction' which automatically makes the file/activity available at a certain time.

How to set up restrict access

  1. Turn editing on

  2. In the section/topic you would like to add your exam submission link activity, click on add an activity or resource and choose to upload a Moodle assignment activity.

  3. In the description box of the file or resource, we recommend that you write any instructions or important information you want the students to see. DO NOT write any text you do not want students to see as this will show to students even if the activity or resource is restricted.

  4. If you do add instructions, ensure you tick the box to ‘Display description on course page’

  5. Scroll down to the Restrict access section and select Add restriction

  6. Select Date

Screenshot of the 'Add restriction' menu that appears after selecting that option in the previous toggle.
  7. If you want to add a 'release' and 'removal' time for your file or activity, you must add two date restrictions. However you can just add the first ‘from’ restriction
In the example below, we have set up a date/time for our file to be released to students, and a time when it will be removed from view on the page.

Notice in the example above, the dates and times are 24 hours apart. The first restriction is set to 'From', meaning this is when the file will become available.  The second restriction is 'Until', meaning when the file will become unavailable.  This file will therefore become available to students at 12:00 noon on the 26th March and will be removed from their view at 12:00 noon on the 27th March.

  8. Once you have added the restrictions and all other details, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Save and display and confirm the restrictions on your Moodle page.
