How to set up a Group Asssignment using Groups or Groupings

Group Assignments

If you would like a Group to submit a piece of work rather than asking each individual student to submit work, it is only possible to create a Group assignment. This is currently only possible within a Moodle assignment and not possible using Turnitin.

How to Create a Group Assignment

  1. Within your Moodle course, click the Turn editing on button

  2. In the section or topic area you would like to create the Moodle assignment, click on Add an activity or resource

  3. Under the Activities heading, select Assignment and click Add

  4. Give the assignment a Name and add a description of the Moodle assignment

  5. Update the allow submissions from date and due date. Add a cut-off date if you need to

  6. Choose your submission type: Video submission, File submission, (Note, you cannot do Group assignments for Mahara ePortfolio submission type)

  7. The feedback types are defaulted to Feedback files and Annotate PDF. If you wish to add general feedback comments or bulk upload grades, you will need to ensure these are enabled too

  8. Under Group submission settings, for Students submitting as part of a group? – Choose Yes. For Groups to work, you will need to set these up in advance. Here is our guide on setting up Groups

  9. Require group to make submission. If you would like to enable this, select Yes.

  10. Require all group members submit. We would recommend leaving this as no unless you would like all members of the group to click on submit before the submission is submitted for marking. Otherwise, it would stay in draft format.

  11. Under the Grade section, ensure you change blind marking to No. Currently Group submissions are not anonymously marked.

  12. Under the Common module settings, under Group mode, choose Separate groups.

  13. Expand all other settings and make the necessary amendments or keep them as the default. Edit how you are notified about submissions, how you are grading the assignment or choosing whether you would like to activate the marking workflow

  14. Once you are happy with the options you have chosen, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Save and display (or click Save and return to course)

Groupings

Sometimes within a course, you have more than one kind of Group. For example, you may have a one-week extension group and a group(s) set up for a group submission. You will find if this is the case and a student is added into more than one group, they may not be able to submit in the Group submission group. If this happens to you, you can create a Grouping and set up the Moodle assignment using Groupings. Here is our guide on setting up a Grouping.

How to Create a Group Assignment Using Groupings

Follow the steps on How to create a Group assignment above and follow the other settings below in addition.

After Step 10, ensure you change Grouping for students groups to the Grouping you have just created (i.e in this example, Assignment 2 – Group submission)

And the other setting to change when using Groupings, is after Step 12 above, choose your Grouping. Again, for this example it would be Assignment 2 – Group Submission.
