How to Create a Group or Grouping
How To Set Up A Group
In your Moodle course, click on the course Management button
Under the Students column, click on Groups
Click on Create group
Type in a name for the group (E.g. Resit Group August – avoid adding identifiable group titles such as names of students) and click on Save changes. If you wish to have an enrolment key, enable group messaging and add a new picture, you can do this here too.
Next, you will need to add users to the group. Click on Add/remove users
Click on the member you wish to add in the Potential members column and then click the Add button. Or vice versa to remove members from a group. Keep on adding users until your group is complete.
Your group has been created and you are now able to restrict content by group. See the Restrict Access by group guide for further details on how to do this.
Groupings
Sometimes within a course, you have more than one kind of Group. For example, you may have a one-week extension group and a group(s) set up for a group submission. You will find if this is the case and a student is added into more than one group, they will not be able to submit in the Group submission group. If this happens to you, you can create a Grouping and set up the Moodle assignment using Groupings. See our guide on setting assignments using Groups or Groupings
How To Create A Grouping
Once you have set up your groups, you can then add these groups to a Grouping. For example, I have a group submission of 5 groups. The groups are called Group A, B,C,D and E and I want to add these groups into a Grouping called ‘Assignment 2 – Group submission’ and then restrict access to a Group submission by this Grouping.
Click on the Course management button and under the Student column, click on Groups
Click on the Groupings tab at the top of the page
Click on Create Grouping
Add a title for this group, for example Assignment 2 – Group submission and click on Save changes
In the edit section by the groupings name, click on the show groups in grouping button
Choose the groups you want to add to the grouping and click on Add. You have now created your Grouping.
