Setting A Weighted Mean Of Grades In Gradebook

Moodle automatically assigns a simple weighted mean of grades to every assignment that is added in a Moodle course. (For example: if a module has 2 assignments, each activity will be weighted 50%)

However, if your assignments are not weighted equally, it is possible to change the gradebook to a weighted mean of grades, which will allow you to choose the weightings of each activity. Once all the marks are in, you can show the gradebook to your students with the final course total.

Setting a weighted mean of grades in gradebook

1. Login to Moodle

2. Click on ‘Gradebook setup’ from the course administration block found in the sidebar of your course.

3. At the top of the table, from the Edit drop down from the Actions column, click on Edit settings

4. Under the Grade category section, change the Aggregation drop down menu to Weighted mean of grades and then Save Changes

5. You can now choose your weightings for each activity. In the example, one assignment has a weighting of 0.2, the second assignment has a weighting of 0.6 and a quiz has a weighting of 0.2. zeros have been entered for the rest of the activities.

6. Once you have made your amendments, click on Save changes

7. Once all your grades have been input, you can show the gradebook to your students by clicking on ‘Edit Settings’ in the administration block on the right hand side. Scroll down and click on ‘Appearance’ then change ‘Show Gradebook to students’ to ‘Yes’.
