How to Create a Moodle Workshop Activity, Part 1 -The Initial Set Up
Setting Up The Workshop Activity – Quick Guide
The Moodle Workshop activity tool is used to facilitate peermarking. This activity can seem a bit complicated to start off with. After the initial set up of creating the activity, there are five further steps or phases that you and/or your students would work through. For the initial set up, see our guide below or see our How to Create Moodle Workshop Activity Part 2 guide to go through the next five phases of the Workshop activity. If you would like further support about this process, please do get in touch with the TEL team.
If you need your workshop to be anonymous, please contact the TEL team (tel@yorksj.ac.uk) who can do this for you, at least 3 days before your workshop is set to go live.
How do I set up a Moodle Workshop activity?
In the course where you would like to add your Workshop Activity, Turn editing on and in the section or topic area you would like to add the activity, click on add an activity or resource button.
Select Workshop and click Add
Give your Workshop a Name and a description to let your students know what the workshop is about.
If you're not sure about the Grading settings, leave them as default. Students get two grades - one for the work they submit and one for the quality of their peer assessments. The page Workshop grading strategies gives more information.
The Submission settings is where you tell students what they must do for this task. They can type directly into Moodle or upload one or more files. You can let them submit late if you wish.
The Assessment settings is where you tell students what they are looking for when assessing the work of their peers. Don't give detailed instructions because this will be done later. You can let them assess their own work too, based on the more detailed criteria you will add later.
Feedback will give the students the option of typing in some free text comments when they peer assess. You can make this optional, required or turn it off. Students may also upload files as feedback, and you can specify which file types they may add. You can also add a conclusion to the workshop which will display when it is over.
You might find it useful to give your students one or more Example submissions to practise on first.
Think about whether, in the Availability section, you want the students to be given submissions to assess automatically once the submission deadline is over.
Once you are happy with the options you have chosen, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Save and display to access further settings.
Next Steps
There are 5 further steps that you and/or your students will have to follow before and during the activity. Please see How to Create a Moodle Workshop Activity Part 2 for further details.
