How to Create a Moodle Workshop Activity, Part 2 - The Five Phases of the Workshop Activity

The Five Phases Of The Moodle Workshop Activity

The Moodle Workshop activity tool is used to facilitate peermarking. This activity can seem a bit complicated to start off with. After the initial set up of creating the activity, there are five further steps or phases that you and/or your students would work through. Our How to Create Moodle Workshop Activity Part 1 guide is designed to help you with the initial set up of the activity. The guide below will go through the next five phases of the activity. If you would like further support about this process, please get in touch with the TEL team.

The 5 phases of the Workshop Activity

The Setup Phase

In this phase, you can change workshop settings, modify the grading strategy or tweak assessment forms.

Click Edit assessment form to provide detailed grading criteria for your students. When finished click on Save and close and all the ticks in the setup phase will be the same and you are ready to switch to the submission phase. Click the icon next to Switch to the submission phase

The Submission Phase

In this phase, students may submit their work (within the submission dates, if set). During this stage, you can allocate submissions for peer review.

  • Click the allocate submissions link to manually allocate submissions, set random allocation and choose whether you want students to assess others’ work

  • If in the Availability section you set the workshop to switch to the submission phase automatically once the submission deadline is over, choose Scheduled allocation.

  • Once the students have submitted, click the icon or text to move to the Assessment phase if you chose to switch phases yourself. (Remember that you can move back a phase if you need to, for example if you want to allow a student to resubmit.)

The Assessment Phase

In this phase, students will assess the submissions of their peers they have been allocated according to the instructions and criteria you have given them.

  • You can monitor students process by looking at the grades underneath the phases screen

  • When the submissions have been peermarked, click the icon to move to the Grading evaluation phase

The Grading Evaluation Phase

In this phase, students cannot modify their submissions or their assessments. You can use the grading evaluation tools to calculate final grades and provide feedback for students.

  • Moodle calculates the final grades for submission and for assessment. The page Using Workshop gives more details on how the grading works.

  • For the grade for assessment, you can decide how strict you want the comparison to be. If you are not sure, leave it as the default 'fair'.

  • You can re-calculate the grades several times.

  • As a tutor, you can change grades here, if you need to.

The Closed Phase

When you are satisfied with the final grading, click the icon or text to close the workshop. The Closed phase will be highlighted and students will be able to see their grades, any published submissions and a conclusion if you added one.
