Minimum Standards Template for Moodle Courses

Minimum Standards Template for Moodle Courses

When you activate a module through ‘Moodle Modules’, Moodle creates the course and automatically applies the Minimum Standards Template (MST).

What is the purpose of a Minimum Standards Template?

The Minimum Standards Template provides a clear scaffold for building your Moodle course. It helps create a consistent student experience, particularly around assessment information, support and key module advice.

What does the Minimum Standards Template contain?

The top section of your Moodle course is known as Section 0.

Guidance for Staff

At the top of your newly created course, you will find an information and advice area for staff. Select each tab heading to open the content.

MST Advice.png contains information and advice aimed at staff in a tabbed format.

We recommend keeping this section hidden from students. You may need to refer back to it throughout the academic year.

Introduction to Module

Add a short introduction to your module. The template includes prompts to help you decide what to include.

Please keep the page ‘Core Inclusive Practices: what inclusive teaching you can expect on this module’.

Please also keep the Announcements forum. This is the quickest way to communicate with all students currently enrolled on your module.

Main Content Area

The main content area is where you will add the bulk of your teaching materials.
Section 1 will be the first box in your grid (in the example below, Student Voice appears in Section 1).

The MST uses a Grid format with 18 sections.

You can still choose an alternative format for your course, such as Topics or Collapsed Topics.

The five sections outlined in a red box below are required in all courses. We recommend keeping them in this order to support consistency and improve the student experience.

All courses should include these five sections:

  • Student Voice

  • Assessments

  • Resits & Deferral

  • Student Support & Wellbeing

  • External Examiners
