Technical Problems During an Exam Using a Timed Moodle Quiz
Is this affecting an individual or all students taking the Moodle Quiz?
Technical Problem: Individual Student
Computer, network or browser issue has created a fault on an individual student computer during an exam.
Once an attempt has been started in a timed Moodle Quiz, the timer will continue to run until the time has ended and this cannot be paused.
However, Tutors can change the time allowed for an individual student as long as the Quiz is still open and has not expired.
The quiz question that the student was actively working on just before the technical issue occurred is unlikley to have been saved.
Please use your judgement to allow extra time for this as well.
Providing Additional Time
In the unlikely event of a computer, network or browser issue, follow the steps below immediately as soon as the student alerts you.
Steps to Resolve Individual Student Issues
Take a note of the student name and the exact time that the issue occurred.
Once the issue on the computer has resolved, or the student has logged into another computer, follow the ‘Steps to add a User Override to the Quiz’.
Extend the ‘close the quiz’ setting, or the ‘time limit’ setting for the individual accordingly. Check to see if they had been given extra time initially because of a LAP or for another reason.
Click ‘Save’.
If the issue occurred towards the end of the Moodle Quiz and the quiz has finished and been automatically submitted, you may need to give that student another attempt at the quiz.
Please note that the new quiz attempt will not contain the responses saved in the student's previous attempt.
Technical Problem: Group of Students
Network or browser issue has created a fault on student computers during an exam.
Providing Additional Time
In the unlikely event of a network or browser issue, follow the steps below immediately as soon as the students alert you.
Steps to Resolve Group Student Issues
Advice for Students
Remain in place and follow exam condition protocols.
Do not attempt to submit or refresh browser (if it is a temporary fault, once the network returns, the local cache may update Moodle.
Write down which question you were attempting and the time the fault occurred.
Advice for Invigilators / Tutors
Note down the time that the fault occurred.
Log a support request on the IT Support Portal to determine if the issue is with the computer room or with Moodle as a whole.
Contact the named TEL contact (who you have arranged will be available during the exam for support).
When the issue has been resolved, if the Moodle Quiz time has not yet passed, extend the ‘close the quiz’ time in the Quiz settings to grant all users extra time or follow the ‘Steps to add a User Override to the Quiz’.
Be sure to give those with individual or group overrides, extra time by editing their original override times.
However if the Moodle Quiz time setting has passed, you will need to grant all users a second attempt at the quiz.
If so, follow the steps to allow additional quiz attemps.
Allowing Additional Quiz Attempts
Open the Moodle Quiz settings (click on the Quiz → Course Management ->Quiz Administration - Settings).
Go to the ‘Timing’ section and change the ‘close the quiz’ time to add on the extra time that a new attempt will take.
Go to the ‘Grade’ section and change the ‘Attempts allowed’ to 2.
Save changes
Ask students to start the quiz again.
Important: Remember to edit any existing group or individual overrides (which you had already set up) with the new completion time for the second attempt.
Please note that the new quiz attempt will not contain the responses saved in the student's previous attempt.
